Kung Fu drastically challenged the conservative, militaristic, and philosophically naive outlook I held as a 20 year faded college student and “gung-ho” ROTC cadet in 1972. Now, 36 years later, I have had the opportunity to peer Kung Fu once more, and the impact has been nearly as noteworthy. I have been disabled for severe depression and terror for over 15 years, including stop to two years of hospitalization. In all of that time I have barely moved forward–until re-watching Kung Fu. The expose has visually reminded me of many things, repeatedly told me by therapists, in such a map that I am once again able to reflect–especially while watching the show–a dinky more positively on my life.

That is the beauty and mastery of Kung Fu, one of the most inspiring shows ever made: it invokes one to Contemplate, discuss, and peer. The only other present I have seen have such an attain on so many people (nearly 90% of my ROTC class of 207 cadets watched Kung Fu as well as me), is the new two years of Star Jog. BUT, the level and intensity invoked by Kung Fu was immeasurably greater than that of Star Traipse. The commentaries and features (peek the Comments for listing of these items) often mention how teachers “required” students to scrutinize Kung Fu, and then discussed the episodes in class. In deed, it is the philosophical nature of the display that most appeals to me and many who witness it.
Conversely, I will not lisp that the reveal led me to imprint up for Judo classes too (over 50% of my friends signed up for some design of martial arts), but the Karate nature of the display was never that spicy to me. Kung Fu is frequently accredited for “introducing” thousands of people to the martial arts. Unfortunately, many who peep the prove or have watched the indicate have followed the path of what I deem “aggressive” martial arts, forgetting the retrospective nature of apt Kung Fu. But, I must possess that if parents view the display with their children, they can have an opportunity to talk with their children about both aspects of Kung Fu.

Another incredible feature of the prove is that viewers are presented with the reality of bigotry and hate–something that never ends, and is completely pertinent to today’s world. (Please witness the Comments for an example of how the mere fact that I lamented–now also in the Comments–that the DVDs are in English only prompted someone “disrespectful to Americans living in AMERICA.”) Again, parents could easily employ episodes to discuss and benefit their children–be they victims, violators, or naive–deal with bigotry and detest.
PLEASE NOTE: Warner Brothers has apparently advertised, and thus Amazon has listed, this location to beget wide-screen formate; survey the Comments for more discussion on this. While the Season One episodes have been digitally reformatted “IN A “MATTED” WIDESCREEN FORMAT PRESERVING A THEATRICAL EXHIBITION ASPECT RATIO. ENHANCED FOR WIDESCREEN TVs,” all episodes and features in the Season 2 and 3 sets are in fact paunchy hide. The release date (on Amazon and the support of the red slither case for the series) states 2007, but season boxes all region they were done in 2005; so I don’t mediate there is any disagreement between the Complete Series Box Status and the single season box sets. On an even sadder heed, while Warner Brothers did attempt to improve the quality of the shows and alter the formate, they did so, with varying success, for the first season only. (Again, please seek the Comments for more discussion on this matter) . For the second and third seasons, Warner Brothers either did nothing or very slight to restore the negatives, so the episodes are littered with white specs, scratches, and so on (although I found them no less bothersome than those found when watching a well former copy of a movie showing at a theater; for more discussion on this, sight the Comments) . That said, one must remain mindful of the fact that “Kung Fu” was filmed for television not the theater, was on a cramped budget, and the fact that the negatives, when placed in the vault for storage, were most likely not very high quality to originate with; after all, nobody anticipated cable television syndication, let alone VHS and DVD production when the negatives were stored. On the other hand, this inconsistency in DVD quality (be it television shows or movies) is what I have now near to ask from Warner Brothers: misinformation and cramped or no care for their consumers; out of seventeen letters I have sent to them with questions, they have never replied to a single one.
All that said and done: Please think renting (if available) or buying the Kung Fu series, and leer it with family and friends if you have them. “Kung Fu – The Complete Series” includes the award winning Pilot movie and all 62 episodes on 11 discs, starring David Carradine as Kiwai Chang Caine, Philip Ahn as Master Kan, and Keye Luke as Master PO. Special guest stars (some of which I have eminent in the Comments) include David’s father John Carradine, Benson Fong, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, Don Johnson, Leslie Nielsen, William Shatner, and others. “Kung Fu” is a reveal that is opinion provoking, educational, inspirational, and unforgettable. “Kung Fu” is a prove that can be watched over and over–by yourself, with friends, or with your family. There is no other TV expose that I would recommend for people of all ages than “Kung Fu”–so, treat yourself with the whole series.
UPDATE–FEBRUARY 22, 2009: It came to my attention while reading “A Kid’s Review–Kung Fu is the best, and this is the best scheme to beget them,” that I failed to mention the broad extra features included in each of the three season sets. In particular, in the Season Three Place, there is a lively documentary that follows David Carradine and some of his friends on a race to China, where David is given a Shaolin robe on their visit to the celebrated Shaolin Temple Monastery, a key state depicted in the series, and David plays his flute on the Mammoth Wall of China while it is snowing. For Slay Bill – Volume One and Extinguish Bill – Volume Two fans, there is a bonus feature on the Season Two residence that features David Carradine having dinner with stars/friends from these two films and the “Kung Fu” series. (Watch the Comments for more details on other bonus features and special guest stars, including Harrison Ford!) .
Also, I feel like this review has become too long in my efforts to retort questions. Therefore, I am going to lop my other updates and area them in a comment. For first time readers, these comments deal with the following: film format and transfer quality for each season; languages and subtitles for the episodes and extra features; the fact that the discs are double sided; more on how the series is packaged; and, bonus features (rather than listing them here) . I sincerely apologize if this is an danger for some, but if you gawk at the comments you will understand unbiased how long this review was getting.
June 14, 2009: I have deleted my response to the individual whose comments have been once again removed by Amazon, as they were out of site without that person’s comments. If you wish to read them, I have saved them and would be gay to send them to you–just go to my Profile to regain my email address. And thanks to everyone for making this my most successful, albeit declining in popularity vote percentages. Regardless, if my review sparks interests, then it has achieved one of my objectives.
If this review was not qualified to you, I would relish learning the reason(s) so I can improve my reviews. My goal is to provide relieve to potential buyers, not bag into any arguments. So, if you only disagree with my idea, could you please say so in the comments and not prove that the review was not genuine. Thanks.
There are lots of reviews which already talk (extensively) about why Kung Fu was such a vast reveal, and worth owning on DVD. Instead I objective wanted to form certain people know what they are getting with this position…
I hesitated to hold this spot at first because it had all 3 seasons packaged together, but didn’t mention anything about special features, etc. I wanted to develop distinct I had the commentaries & featurettes that the individual seasons boasted. Eventually, I bought this version because the designate dissimilarity won me over (objective before the holidays it was $35 + desirable saver shipping!) and I was jubilant to gather out that the situation contained all 3 seasons as they appear individually, as well as a nice exiguous dash mask to store them all together. The individual seasons & this package are the same, except that this one costs far less.

This is the first movie I remember seeing as a kid. I LOVED it. It was my common. Then, I didn’t salvage to ogle it again for several years (dead Blockbuster!) When I finally saw it again, I Unexcited liked it. I like it as I write this very day. The music is superior (the background music slow the movie that nobody really conciously listens to, but helps the mood anyway) . The animation’s salubrious, too. And I ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT! (How often does that happen? ) Glimpse, what happens a lot of the time, is that people blame colors they don’t like, or designs that are annoying, or WHATEVER on the animation. But it isn’t the animation’s fault! The diagram the thing on-screen MOVES is the only thing the animators do, mostly. So, if you really want to criticize the animation, observe at how they Go, not what they gape like. Do you peer?
I deem that, really, most of the reason that this is one of my accepted movies is that it is about BOOKS. When I was limited, my dad read me “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” and “The Hobbit”; things like that. So, naturally, I loved books and stories. This is practically the only movie I’ve seen that encourages reading so distinguished while quiet being accurate. It’s determined that the filmmakers themselves (or at least, a lot of the people working on it) actually like to read. THAT’S really why I like the Pagemaster.

I first saw this movie with my gain Mom when it first came out into the theatres. I am now 14-and I don’t care what you think- and I absolutely loved this movie.
I agree with the review by amazon.com which declares the “animation to be middling, but what can you say about a movie that encourages a kid to consume up a book? ” That is so just. In a plot, this chronicle reminds me of myslef…no, I’m not overprotective of myself or obsessed with statistics…but I do cherish to read…fantasy for that matter, and this pulls me wait on into another fantasy realms that I cannot define.

Richard Burton stars in this genuine war drama, directed by Robert Wise. James Mason reprises his role as Rommel, from “The Desert Fox.”
I have to admit, I watched this in the hopes that I might collect some additional insight into the desert fighting in Iraq.

And I did. Even though this is a 50-year broken-down movie, the desert scenes…the contaminated reality of a “war in a desert”…gives this film another subtext for the viewer, and makes it all the more interesting.
Yes, there are the standard war-movie subplots, but for the most piece, there’s a lot of uncommonly favorable elements to this movie. The Aussie aspect, the procedural details to the raids and attacks. It’s constantly bright…
Consider this a obliging bet for war film fans, and an equally superior bet for those who simply luxuriate in a trustworthy record well told.

Former editor, turned up-and-coming director, Robert Wise, essentially turns an otherwise fairly standard world war 2 narrative into a classic war film. Tight editing, decent special effects, a honorable screenplay plus compelling action scenes led by Burton, alongside an able British and Aussie sounding cast, select “The Desert Rats” to cinematic respectability.
“The Desert Rats” delivers in the action department with a frontal Panzer attack in the opening minutes of the film and tries to support up the prance for 88 minutes.
WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT
Richard Burton [Lt. Colonel MacRoberts] is a hard-nose officer in the British Eighth Army. He’s entrenched at Tobruk and battling Rommel’s Africa Corp. Fleet placed in charge of a newly arrived, green Australian unit, MacRoberts keeps tight discipline and asks the impossible of his men. Nevertheless, the results for McRoberts are surprisingly well-behaved as he and his men play their roles in continuing the defensive efforts at Tobruk for more than 8 months against Rommel. In ample fable telling invent, we gaze the action more than hear about it, and it is all rather believably depicted.
Probably for the audiences abet, MacRoberts is temporarily captured by the Germans in a night raid, where, while having a injure field dressed, he meets and defiantly dares Rommel [James Mason], “if you can crush Tobruk – then crush it!”
Afterwards, amidst a nice action scene where the German truck carrying the allied prisoners is strafed by Spitfires, MacRoberts escapes and returns too easily to the allied side, across enemy lines.
— *THE PLAYERS* —
Richard Burton – Capt. MacRoberts
Robert Newton – Bartlett
Robert Douglas – General
James Mason – Rommel
Torin Thatcher – Barney
Chips Rafferty – Smith
Charles “Bud” Tingwell – Lt. Carstairs
The film is narrated throughout by what I acquire is the stutter of Michael Rennie, who played “Klaatu” in the “Day the Earth Stood Calm” and was a “scream” in the preceding “The Desert Fox”, 1951.
—* THE PRODUCTION CREDITS *—

Ray Kellogg – Special Effects [between 1950-1955 did effects for about 50 feature films, ended with Tora!Tora!Tora!, 1970]
BOTTOM LINE: “THE DESERT RATS” – SIMPLY A TIGHT WELL DONE WAR DRAMA
This simple film holds up well [now 54 years] on the foundation of an well-behaved cover play. Burton, Mason and Wise really team-up well to maintain this film really tight and mostly filled with relevant and curious action for 88 minutes.

When I’m looking at the Top Ten list’s of America’s critics and the nominations of the DGA,WGA and all the other guilds and press associations, I terribly miss David Fincher’s outstanding film “Fight Club”, which is possibly the best film of 1999.
Not only is the film visualy lovely, it is also very thought-provoking, wickedly silly and, above all, extremely inviting. Only few films managed to be so many things at once. David Fincher, in my view one of the most consuming directors of the decade, fills his movie with so many ideas that it would be sufficient for three more movies, and they are not unbiased gimmicks for their hold sake, they all mean something. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are shiny in the leads and the soundtrack by the Dust Brothers fits perfectly to the images.
Many reviewers plan the film was fascist. I deem you can only call this ridiculous, since that assumes Fincher sympathizes with Tyler Durden’s project mayhem. In fact, he invites us to invent our believe concept, like Stanley Kubrick did in “A Clockwork Orange”. “Fight Club” hands over the resposibility to the viewer. This may be unhappy to some, others (like myself) will embrace this.
FIGHT CLUB arrived in the US with a blaze of publicity stressing its violence and nihilism; some critics (and those conclude to the production) countered this with the suggestion that it was an anti-materialist jeremiad. On a second viewing, it seems like neither — it’s easier to stare it as a vivid, committed and complex portion of filmmaking. David Fincher once again dazzles with his direction, which is as intelligently energetic as the acting of Brad Pitt and, especially, Edward Norton. What’s really impressive, however, is the arrangement that the film manages to flirt with an anti-materialist, hyper-masculine primitivism even as it suggests that we’re all a itsy-bitsy too sophisticated to consume it (as it were) .
Buy,Download, Or Stream Fight Club! Click Here
FIGHT CLUB may beget that we’re not the clothes we wear, or the credit cards in our wallet, but it’s savvy enough to realise that our paths of opinion and modes of organisation are almost entirely deplorable by the world we’ve created. Is the solution to raze that world? Well, that’s an option — but eye closely in the movie’s second half and ogle how subtly and hilariously Fincher undermines this: the anarchists start to chant management-speak, to dissolve into a collective identity, and to design franchises as if they were selling frappucino rather than revolution. Norton is especially alarmed at all this, and his fantastic reactions to the disintegration of ‘Project Mayhem’ are the unruffled (and proper) centre of the film. Rather like ANIMAL FARM, Fincher tells us that we can have our revolution, but it’s going to cost us dear; perhaps even the individuality and reason which we’d hoped to derive from our actions.

One of the best of Hitchcock (although as far as his films go, Hitch probably has the best track narrate of any director living or wearisome) . This film is basically the unusual “Fugitive” and follows radiant closely the site to his “The 39 Steps” from 1935 – a man is inaccurate for a CIA agent and is caught in a “deadly game of cat and mouse,” as it were. I Care For the music and the visuals that inaugurate out the film – it makes me wish I had been alive to behold it in a movie theater in the 50’s. And although this film is over 2 hours long, there’s no diagram you can be bored – the suspense is so intense you’ll be chewing your nails the whole time (I did the first time I saw it) . Cary Grant is sterling as always, James Mason plays one of the most tainted of Hitchcock’s villains (I would Savor to have this guy’s converse) and Eva Marie Saint looks ravishing and plays her fraction well. I also enjoyed seeing Martin Landau in an early role as one of James Mason’s henchmen and Jessie Royce Landis (the mother from “To Salvage a Thief”) as Grant’s mother (although both were very approach the same age at the time) . And I savor any film get by Bernard Herrmann – this guy should have had a mantle covered with awards, but as luck would have it, most of his scores went not only un-awarded but un-nominated (as this one did) . By all means, if you don’t enjoy it, buy it up today – and by the arrangement, agreeable job for FINALLY releasing it on DVD, MGM.
With this film, Alfred Hitchcock station out to top himself and pick up serve on top after the failure of VERTIGO; he did unprejudiced that. NORTH BY NORTHWEST is automatically a classic with the acting by Cary Grant (his fourth and final film with Hitchcock), Eva Maria Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll (another one of Hithcock’s favorites), and young Martin Landau (in his film debut), the wonderful region pieces (the UN destroy, the cropduster sequence, and the climax atop Mt. Rushmore), Bernard Hermann’s music accumulate, and the classic work of the camera by the Master of Suspense. But this DVD’s extras really add to the film. It includes a documentary hosted by Saint (“Destination Hitchcock,” not “The Man in Lincoln’s Nose” as listed on this region), an audio commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman, two theatrical trailers (a standard trailer and one featuring Hitchcock), a TV Station, an isolated music audio track and the film itself remastered in Dolby 5.1 Audio and 1.66:1 widescreen anamorphic format. The only spot is it comes in a snap case like all Warners DVDs, not allowing a booklet with production notes. But this DVD is a must acquire, especially if you’re a fan of Hitch. It’s also a impress of interest for 007 fans (like myself) . This film brought about contemplate thrillers and you should compare the cropduster sequence in this film to the helicopter sequence in FROM RUSSIA WITH Cherish.

My review is on the Unrated version. The Unborn kept me on the edge of my seat thru out and the movie runs at a brisk whisk. There was very itsy-bitsy gore in this movie but I deem you pick up it wasn’t well-known. It maintains a level of creepiness from the very first petite. Odette Yustman plays the young woman who is the target of a demonic spirit and Gary Oldman is the Rabbi who leads the failed Exorcism (does anyone contemplate Gary looks remarkably like a young Peter O’Toole in this film? ) . I definitely don’t believe the film deserves all the negative critcism it received. Negative reviews tend to lower one’s expectations – for me it was a proper surprise. I believe you will derive the 90 minutes viewing scary time well spent.
This was an okay alarm flick. I savor a obliging scary movie and I did leap from my seat in a couple of scenes, but I also like a really beneficial scary fable, and this one unprejudiced kept confusing me!

***WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD, ONLY READ IF YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE***
First, our main character is skittish by demonic visions… then she babysits a demonic child! Then we learn she had a twin that died in utero. So…ok… her twin brother is haunting her. NO! We derive out it’s a demon spirit haunting her and since her brother died in the womb, it’s now after her. OK, so what’s with the demonic child our heroine was babysitting? We rep out that the spirit is trying to believe her because a twin is the easiest blueprint for it to enter our world… but no! It’s already possessed the neighbor boy. And continues to own almost every other character in the movie except for the one that is swear to be the “easiest”. I didn’t understand this site hole or why Nazi experimentation caused demonic possession or why this girl’s mother killed herself instead of staying to assign her daughter from the noxious she knew about. There were too many strings left dangling in this movie for me to really rep into it although the visual effects were definitely scary — it’s myth telling that really gives me the goosebumps, not crazy cgi effects and latex creatures!

Some of the other reviewers have complained that this series doesn’t match with the “classic” history authors on the subject. It’s my notion that this thought fails to inspect how Michael Wood’s documentaries usually operate. His research often has a revisionist ethic, and if you survey the credits and his interviews, many of his sources are often unique versus classic experts, and he also goes out of his scheme, especially in this series, to bag folk and indigenous perspectives.

This is in line with his general humanist near. I for one like it, and while he interprets facts with a an gape for revision or “what ifs” or “objective maybe,” he never abuses the subject. In fact, he takes us on a pace to request everything we might know or assume we know from reading canonical texts.
This particular series is also beautifully shot and taken as a whole is a current educational and entertainment experience for those who know runt about the Conquistadors and their importance to world history.
Whether it shows a lot of actors in costume or not isn’t really the point. He takes you through areas as a tour guide and tells you the history. The last portion about De Vacca and his revelations and the astonishing ride was unbelievable. I thoroughly enjoyed this unbiased as great as I do Ken Burns’ documentaries, it is a different style. I don’t want to view everyone do things the same scheme. As far as him showing art, he did point to art, he also showed you by trying many things how these people survived, what they ate, how they cooked, how they made plows, how the Aztecs made weapons that were putrid to the steel ones the Spaniards came equipped with. Also, the bolt of the Incas leaving their pleasing land to try and do separation between themselves and the conquistadors was heartbreaking. I very powerful enjoyed it and will leer forward to more of Michael Wood’s exuberant storytelling.

the action film is carried to a rather challenging shameful with THE LAST BOY SCOUT, a movie that pushes the world-weary detective stereotype to fresh, surreal levels. Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis), is a shamus hired by his best friend to protect a stripper who is subsequently killed. her washed-up football playing boyfriend (Damon Wayans) hooks up with Joe to accept out whodunit and why. Willis’ performance and Black’s screenplay combine to do a portrait of a guy who is so down and out that our first spy of him is a shot of him passed out in his occupy car while being harassed by snotty neighbourhood kids. throughout the whole film, Willis delivers deadpanned one-liners while constantly getting the crap kicked out him. BOY SCOUT is a guilty pleasure. it is mindless, formulaic, and particularly hateful towards women (and men as well) in spots with an uncompromisingly un-PC attitude that is very fresh in this day and age… and very droll. action films don’t salvage any nastier than this one.
Tony Scott’s THE LAST BOY SCOUT may be trash, but for an action flick it is very well-made, highly titillating trash.
Of course, you could invent a very friendly case against this film. Though I did not come by it quite as woman-hating as some of the critics said it was upon the film’s release, I would ogle that there is a subtle layer of misogyny throughout the movie—particularly with the two women characters in Joe Hallenbeck’s life, his uncaring, cheating wife and his bratty, verbally abusive daughter—that might acquire some viewers more queasy than I was. And, objectively speaking, THE LAST BOY SCOUT is basically a retread of writer Shane Black’s reliable LETHAL WEAPON—a more foul-mouthed, ultra-violent retread with a lot of corny humor. This is an all-out testosterone-fest if I’ve ever seen one. If you’ve got a dilemma with people, objective punch ‘em in the “head or gut”—if anything else, that’s the message of this movie. Really, Shane Murky, where did your taste go since LETHAL WEAPON and LETHAL WEAPON 2?
Despite all that, though, this movie tranquil delivers what matters most in this genre: thrills and inspiring action scenes. Having seen this movie only recently, I must say that it is probably one of the most tantalizing action pictures I’ve seen in a long while, perhaps toothsome because of its excesses. Tony Scott definitely knows how to film action scenes well (the climactic action scenes in the football stadium is a salubrious example of his skill here), and of course he brings his mature slick style to the material. And its state, provocative a ruthless attempt to legalize gambling in pro football, takes some kinda sharp twists and turns along the device. (It’s like a hardcore action-film version of one of those hardboiled detective films of the ’40s.)

In short, THE LAST BOY SCOUT is very trashy but quiet challenging action movie that can be quite fun to peruse, depending on whether you can overlook lapses of character logic (why on Earth is Shelly Marcone giving away his idea of framing Hallenbeck for Senator Baynad’s slay objective so Hallenbeck can outsmart ‘em all? ) as well as the more objectionable misogynistic aspects of the film. Personally, I felt a miniature guilty about enjoying it so distinguished…but not guilty enough not to admit it. Marginally recommended.

The box spot itself is lively looking and made the same as the first season. It’s made in ‘book’ format, which, in my plan, is a lot more easy to handle than the usual fold-out box sets. While the first season had a poster of Ichigo with character reference sketches on the assist of it, this Ichigo poster is blank on the assist. There is no inclusion of a paper with the episode titles, which I wish they did. While all you gawk on the camouflage are episode numbers, each one does, indeed, have an official title that would originate locating current episodes powerful easier.
The special on this plot focuses on four divulge actors: Michelle Ruff (Rukia), Wally Wingert (Renji), Spike Spencer (Hanataro), and Dan Woren (Byakuya) . They discuss their opinions on their characters, as well as converse acting itself. I’m not certain how long it was, but it was long enough to like.

If you are looking for expedient subtitles, these are mediocre. They ravishing mighty maintain to the dubbing ‘rules’. For example, they don’t retain character names as the Japanese VA says them, but always their first name. Chad is always place as ‘Chad’, even if Ichigo is not the one speaking. They also leave off any honorifics (-kun, -san, -chan, etc) in the subs. If you’re picky about that (as I am), it can be elegant irritating. Viz releases always seem to be this diagram, however.
They sub the opening and ending themes as well.
While they claim the episodes are uncut, and the main body of the episodes are indeed whole, they do not include the Shinigami Golden shorts. I’m not obvious if the Japanese DVD releases have them, but I know that they’ve started by now, even if all these particular episodes only are character introductory ones. I only hope that when they actually are exiguous side stories, Viz includes them on the DVDs. This complaint is particularly confusing as they even dubbed Kon’s announcement that they would commence soon in one of the episode previews.
All that aside, $40 (as of today) is a extraordinary ticket for an entire season of a expansive anime.
The first season of “Bleach” ended with Ichigo, Uryu, Chad, Orihime and the cat Yoruichi leaving the living world for the Soul Society, intent on saving Rukia.
But getting there isn’t the least of their problems. The second major arc of the “Bleach” series — called “The Entry” — continues our heroes’ quest to rescue Rukia from a death sentence, but they bustle into a recent plot of obstacles. It’s ravishing divided between action, slapstick and exposition, as well as a series of mysteries and conspiracies — and a lot of likable current characters.
Ichigo and Co. narrowly develop it into the Soul Society, almost losing Uryu along the plan. And unfortunately — between lethal captains and a building-sized Gatekeeper — it’s almost impossible to regain inside the Soul Reapers’ fortress, the Seireitei. Their only map inside is to ask an eccentric friend of Yoruichi’s, a fireworks expert called Kukaku Shiba, to blast them (and her rough-edged brother Ganju) inside the Seireitei from the sky.
But surprisingly, being shot into orbit with a giant cannon isn’t the worst thing that happens. The limited group gets split apart — and Ichigo finds himself facing an increasingly strong series of opponents, including the angry Renji Abarai and the battle-hungry Captain Zaraki. Facing defeat and death, Ichigo is forced to call upon an ally he never knew he had — and face a inferior inner enemy.
When a abolish is committed in the Seireitei, the Soul Reapers are thrown into chaos, as they automatically blame the “ryoka” intruders for the death of one of their beget. Orihime, Chad and Uryu are trying to fight their scheme in, but it’s Ganju and the disquieted Soul Reaper medic Hanataro who execute it to Rukia’s cell — only to deliver a horrifying secret from her past.
If the first season of “Bleach” was all about introducing the main characters and the idea of Soul Reapers, then the second season is all about Ichigo and Co. causing as great mayhem as possible in the Soul Society. Well, the Soul Society is not as reliable and unexcited as Rukia led us to possess — in fact, it has even more weirdos than Ichigo’s hometown.
And while the storytelling is well-balanced, the second season is powerful more violent — there’s floods of blood, massive near-fatal injuries, and Byakuya Kuchiki’s ability to shred opponents from a distance with miniature “cherry blossom” pieces of metal. And the storyline takes an unexpected twist halfway through, when a character is apparently murdered and the lieutenants launch turning against each other. And since there are hints of a conspiracy engaging Rukia, it’s delicate positive that something is scandalous in the plot of the Soul Society. Unbiased what it is remains to be seen, but it promises to cause even more chaos in the Seireitei.
But not all is doom and blood in the second “Bleach” season — it’s tranquil liberally peppered with amusing dialogue (“That’s a attractive cute name for someone who takes himself so seriously.” “MY NAME IS NOT CUTE!”) and physical goofery (Yoruichi’s honest design is revealed to Ichigo) . Though our heroes exercise a lot of time running around causing mayhem, they also gain a lot of humor as well — such as when Ichigo screams for Ganju, only to realize that he honest alerted several off-duty Soul Reapers to his set.
Ichigo has to learn a bunch of novel skills in this season, including getting closer to his inner, um, sword. Uryu’s chivalrous side gets a workout when Orihime is threatened. And Chad’s history is finally revealed in fleshy, such as how this gentle giant became certain never to fight for his fill sake, and how he became speedily friends with Ichigo.
There are a couple of recent characters too: we procure to gawk Renji’s glum youth with Rukia, and why he’s hellbent on defeating Ichigo. And our heroes team up with an adorably timorous Soul Reaper medic named Hanataro, who serves as tour guide/comic relief for noteworthy of the season (“Recognize how burly of life and energy and vitality I am? “) as well as the boar-riding Ganju.
While most of the Soul Reapers aren’t fleshed out, they are given enough quirks and personality to seem very realistic — narcissists, child prodigies, bookworms, battle-o-philes, bombshells and minute creepy girls with pink hair. Two particular standouts are a laid-back, sake-chugging captain named Shunsui Kyoraku, and Rukia’s captain, a sickly hunk named Ukitake.
The second “Bleach” season takes our heroes straight into the heart of the Soul Society, and a lot of fresh grief as well. Definitely worth checking out — but inquire one heckuva cliffhanger.
